MS PowerClub Editorial - April 2023 - Are these gym PRs people are setting really World Records?

Are these gym PRs people are setting really World Records?

Question: Are any of the PR's we have been seeing people set around the globe considered to be World Records or are they just the PRs for the person who performed the lift?
Jason Terry, JBSA, Texas

Editorial: We got this email about a year ago and have held off on responding until some of the smoke surrounding the issue has had a little time to clear. From the perspective of all those we have talked to the answer is - NO! Lest explain why!

When a WORLD RECORD is set it is usually set in a competition setting for very good reason. In a competitive setting the athlete is using competition graded equipment from his or her federation that meets specific qualification. You can go out and buy the same equipment but it has not been check by officials so is it up to the same standards as those used in competitions. The equipment is the first reason but not the MAIN reason.

The main reason these are NOT world records in the act of being in a competition! With all these Youtube lift the athlete is controlling the condition of the mach meet and not the competition its self.If your controlling your own meet your gonna give yourself optimum rest time between lifting attempts. Your going to make the condition as pleasant as humanly possible so that you come close to or exceed your desired outcome. For the MAIN reason these lifts are NOT WORLD RECORDS or any thing close. How many time have you heard a person was say benching allot more than he hit in the meet during training. Thats because he was controlling all those variable mentioned above to maximize his/her performance. You may have to do other lifts at the meet but the main thing is the competition itself. Its going to be more stressful, less forgiving in time between lifts, and allot longer in duration than your average workout. Thats why PRs in the gym during training hardly ever happen in the competition.

So a long story short - NO, those are just training lifts and not World Records.

Power Nutrition April 2023 - Pre-Workout Supplements

Pre-Workout Supplements

Attack the weights and your muscle cells with unparallel ferocity with the help of our ultra advanced thermogenic, fat crushing, cell volumizer and NO booster formula. You'll experience unparallel muscle pumps, strength, mass, energy and proceed to set new personal records every workout. This is the type of BS that is peddled each and everyday from companies push their Pre-workout supplement as the best there is on the market today and tomorrow fro the matter. The truth as always lies in what that pre-workout main purpose is and does it fit your needs.

2 Kinds of Pre-Workouts

Energy Pre-workouts: Most of today's pre-workout supplements focus on getting your Extreme Energy & Focus - which more than often means large amount of stimulant and some Nootropic thrown into the stimulants. If you're a energy junkie, and they are out there, these are your drinks. For the hard trainer these drinks have some sizzle but very little pop when pushing big weight through concentrated effort.

Muscle/Power Pre-workouts: This type of pre-workout is constructed a bit different than those of the energy variety; they concentrate their bulk of the formula on muscle recovery, nourishments and repair, then the energy and focus part. These pre-workout try to include a strong blend insulin mimickers to actually push the nutrients into the cells. Allot have some different forms of Citrulline malates that will help you by providing extra energy during training by flushing lactic acid and ammonia from the muscles, and also by increased ATP with some form pf creatine to boost strength during workouts and decrease recovery time post-workout.

These are your 2 basic types of Pre-Workouts, what you need to do is figure out which side of the equation you fall on, the first kind isn't going to do you much good in the long run, and the second kind tends to be more expensive and increasingly harder to find as different ingredient go up in price.

MS PowerClub Recipe of the Month - Bison Bacon Burger

Bison Bacon Burger

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds ground Lean Bison
  • 2 tablespoons honey brown mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon Worstshire Sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon coarse black pepper
  • 3/4 Organic Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped

Hand mix all ingredient in a large bowl and roll out into 8 even ball. Wrap and freeze 4 for later and prepare the other 4 for cooking. On your cutting board spread out a layer of plastic wrap. Place the burger on the wrap with a layer also place on the top. Flatten each burger to about 1/2 inch, and make a thumb sized dent in the middle of each patty! this keeps the burger flat while cooking. You want a burger not a meat ball! Plastic wrap keep the patties from sticking to you or the counter or board surface! We are ready to cook!!!

Cooking: Grilling or Frying!

Grill or fry the burgers on medium heat, about 5-6 minutes per side, less or more depending on the thickness of the burger and the heat of the pan/grill, or until the internal temperature is about 140°F for medium rare, or 160°F for well done. If you know the butcher of your meat and its quality you can go rare or medium rare but only if your know how fresh your meat is, otherwise follow the above guidelines.

When cooking don't poke of touch the burger, LET THEM COOK! Allot of people want to touch them or move them leave the burger alone. The more you agitate the proteins the tougher the meat, so LEAVE IT ALONE! After about flip your burger and wait another 5-6 minutes. Place the cooked burger on a clean resting plate to let the juices draw back inside of the meat. If you were to cut the burger while it hot off the grill or pan all the juices would run out on to the plate. So let them rest for about 4-5 minutes.

Serve the burger with chopped lettuce, cabbage and sliced or diced tomato, topped with a smoky barbecue sauce. You could add a slice or two of cheese during the last minute of cooking and let it finish while resting for a delicious cheese burger! ENJOY!!!!!!

Burger Stats:

Each 4 oz. Patty yields approx. 3 oz of cooked meat and this is the only thing we calculated as toping can vary wildly.

Well it's spring 2023 and not a damn thing has changed for the better. Economy showing signs of life but still sucks, college football still hasn't fixed its bullshit system of selecting a champion - 4 teams 2 games, total marketing BULLSHIT! Oh yeah powerlifting is still a bunch of alphabet fucking soup. Had some one the other day ask me “What is the best organization to compete in right now?”, I told find the closest meet to where you live. He said there weren't any meet close to where he lived but some within driving distance. He told me the organizations name and what he wanted to do in the sport. We set up a plan to get him into his first couple of meets & test the waters on performance. You do this because there are HUGE differences in gym lifts and meet lifts. It was quite funny because allot of the meets in his state were with another organization, and all the meets we have seen by this organization had some of the strangest rules ever, Fluctuating from one meet to another. Finally we recommended the USAPL. This isn't to say that there are not other really good organization out there (most of us are USPF old timers), there are but for all the meets we have been to for consistency local, national, and international USAPL pretty damn consistent with it rules. They have been the most consistency in their rules no matter what the meet size or location. He also wants to do some international lifting and the IPF is rock solid in that reguard.

We here have talked about this same problem way back in the early 2000s and it has gotten zero percent better. I had some one tell me that there are more meets now and the coverage is better. That's complete bullshit. some of the biggest event are associated with events like the Arnold Classic in Ohio or FIBO expos in Europe. These are huge fitness and sports expos that attract tens of thousands of people to them every year. If powerlifting wants to really succeed it NEEDS to have something of sizeable stature that stands alone by itself. It's not going to get to the size of Arnold Classic or FIBO over night but getting organized under one unified code of rules & regs would be a HUGE first step to consolidation for the betterment of tall athletes.

Enough ranting form the BullDog, until next tile train hard, train heavy, train smart!

POWER CLUB Q&A April 2019 - Putting Power into your Triceps!

Putting Power into your Triceps!

Question: Need your help fast. I have a meet coming up in 6 months and my triceps are really weak at lockout. Thanks - Brad C.

Answer: Thank you for that excellent question!
What you need is mass in the long head of your triceps. Three of the best exercises for doing this are Close Grip Benches, Dips, and Cross Body Db Extensions(They work right at the elbows end for lock out power).

The Exercises:

Close Grip Benches: After a sufficient warm-up and stretching period is done (essential for minimizing injuries), we're going to start with some close grip bench presses. Grasp the bar about 12 inches apart; it may help to have someone help you on the lift off since it's an awkward lift. Lower the bar to just below your pecs, elbows in, and then press straight up… and none of that "J" movement crap like Coach Iwanna B. Strong taught you in high school. You gotta keep your forearms 90 degrees to the floor.

Dips: Hop up on the dipping bars. Keeping your elbows up lower your upper body until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Keep your torso as staight up as possible to keep the emphasis on the triceps. Do as many you can without hitting the mirror in front of you with puke. Jump over to the DB extensions and burn out some high reps with these. Take a breather, and repeat again

Cross Body DB Extensions: Now your saying what the hell are these? Its easy to get the hang of. Lye down on a flat exercise bench with a dumbbell. Raise the dumbbell up to arms length. It should be directly over your shoulder. Now turn your hand so your knuckles are facing your head. In this position lower the dumbbell so it crosses over your body and touches your other shoulder. Using just your arm strength press the dumbbell out to arms length. Don't cheat! As you start to go heavier use your off hand to secure yourself to the bench.

There you have it. Do 3 set of at least 8 reps and no more than 10.

Post-Workout Recovery!

:: From the Manufacture ::

Recover right with our delicious BCAA post-workout drink mix

Highlights:

  • Promotes increased strength, speed, and power**
  • Supports muscle recovery and reduces fatigue**
  • Supports lean muscle maintenance**

BCAA + G RELOAD™ is the ultimate muscle recovery formula designed for athletes and active individuals who want to build lean muscle, minimize soreness, and exercise longer. It is packed with a precise ratio of BCAAs, Vitamin B6, L-Glutamine, and CarnoSyn® beta-alanine. Together, this formula enables maximum absorption and nitrogen retention for lean muscle maintenance.

The three BCAAs, leucine, valine, and isoleucine, promote muscle synthesis and are burned by muscles as fuel during a workout. Leucine is most important because it triggers protein synthesis and supports lean muscle mass.** Both blood and muscle levels of BCAAs decrease during exercise, which necessitates replenishment to maintain lean muscle mass. Take all natural flavored BCAA+G RELOAD™ during and after exercise, and between meals – particularly during times of caloric restriction – to maintain metabolic rate and discourage muscle wasting.

Our Conclusion:

MRM Nutrition Reload BCAA+G taste great! That was the very first thing everybody said, “This taste really good”. Beyond the taste though this supplement really delivered on the recovery part for everybody as well. This supplement also has a good sized serving of over 12 grams per an give you about 27 serving per container. That is as was used here 27 workouts. Depending on how many times a week you train that could be 2 months or one. Also worked great for some on over exhaustion days running from one thing to another. Overall a great supplement for after training and to combat the stresses of daily life. Recommendation: 7.0 / 10.0

This is not DHEA that you bought back in the 90s or even early 2000s this stuff is pure as hell and get to works fast. For some it will upset your stomach a little so ease into it by switching to every other day until for a couple of weeks. We had one person who loved the effects she was getting but she always had a headache later after taking it. We told her to cut the amount in half by opening the capsule and using only half each day, that worked for her. if the headache had persisted she could and should not have continued the product. This stuff is very pure and gets to work fast so gauge it for any adverse effects like headaches and nausea and make adjustments or discontinue if needed. Recommendation: 9.0 / 10.0
